Hello fellow book lovers, friends and friends-I-haven’t-met-yet. How’s life going? Because, let’s be honest, it’s been a whirlwind couple of years, and things have changed. And it’s not just life that’s different, we are. I know because the last time I shared a blog post here (a blog tour in August last year), I worked in law. And, now, well… I’m a writer. You can read the story of how I became a writer here,.

Because I’ve been busy writing for some amazing clients, and studying a copywriting course as I start offering copywriting services, expanding Velvet Opus into more than the book blog it started out as two years ago, my book blogging has fallen to the wayside. But the great thing about the bookish community is that even if you take an unexpected hiatus, it’s waiting for you when you get back. And I’m back, baby. I thought it was long overdue to dust off my book blog, and spotlight a book, so let’s dive right in.

Blog Tour: Book Spotlight

(NOTE: In true fashion, I had technical issues, so I couldn’t post my spotlight on its intended day yesterday, so here it is today).

Today I’m spotlighting a finalist in the Book Bloggers Novel of the Year (BBNYA) 2021. I love a good portal fantasy, so I couldn’t resist sharing this one. Why? Because it has a blurb that reads like a portal fantasy crossed with the goonies, if the goonies were an all-girl group. There’s family, sisterhood bonds, and of course magic. The kind of book we love here at Velvet Opus.

Blurb

One tiny discovery can have enormous consequences…

Almost 10-year-old Octavia Bloom is looking for adventure, but when it comes, it’s in the shape of a tiny fairy door. Dragging her reluctant sister and cousins into the mystery, Octavia discovers her family hiding not ONE but TWO life-changing secrets. Why is her mother searching or an elusive flower? And does she have what it takes to reunite her fractured family. Octavia’s certain the answers lie behind the fairy door, if only she could just find the key…

About the Author

When not searching the backs of wardrobes for Narnia, the bottom of the garden for fairies, or exploring yet another castle, Estelle can be found with her nose in a book or a pen in her hand. Having previously worked in Cardiff Castle, she now writes full time while looking after her four children. She lives on the beautiful South Wales coast with her husband, children and crazy dog.

Wrap-Up

Thank you to The Write Reads Tour team for organising this Blog Tour, and to the author for an eBook to kindly review as part of the 2021 BBYNA competition. I’m currently reading this escapist fantasy as a bedtime read, and as always, all opinions in this blog post are mine, unbiased and honest. The sign-ups will soon be open for the 2022 BBNYA competition, whether for authors to enter their books, or for bloggers wanting to be part of the new panel: follow me on Twitter for updates.
